Depression Treatments

Depression Treatments will differ tremendously depending on the type of depression one has, the depth of the depression, and how long it has been allowed to continue. Differences in treatments may also include more or less talking therapy as opposed to pharmaceutical Depression Treatments.

It is unfortunate that treating depression is likened to dealing with a multi-legged octopus when all one has to deal with it are drugs and words. Mental health treatment must differ with different kinds of depressions and truly modern science still needs to delve very deeply into the human mind before it can continue to treat depression as adequately as the current mental health community would like.

Depression Treatments in the “old days” used to involve the use of shock therapy, which eventually rendered the brain totally incapable of dealing with the simple tasks that make our lives worth living. The treatments unfortunately rendered those people into non-functioning zombies as many “Hollywood” movies will attest.

Today almost 80% of people receiving Depression Treatments will get better once they receive treatment. Often psychotropic drugs alone can erase depression and help people to become functioning happy members of society once again. Psychotropic medications are especially efficacious where there is a chemical imbalance in the person’s brain that has led to the depression.

Often the Depression Treatments involve not only medication but also talk therapy. For example one type of these is Cognitive Psychotherapy. This is a type of talk therapy that centers on the negative thoughts and feelings that the depressed person uses, such as “This won’t work” and “It’s useless to try that”. The cognitive therapy allows the patient to examine the negative thoughts more closely and finally to see that “things” will not necessarily turn out the way that their minds have construed them.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy involves relationships, whether there is an existing one creating the problems, or perhaps even grief in having lost a loved one.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy involves the person’s childhood and what has led them to have erroneous beliefs about either their childhood or how their childhood formed their thoughts of today.

A veritable pharmacopoeia exists of various drugs that can be used for Depression Treatments, each treating a certain deficiency or imbalance of the mind’s chemicals. Each drug seems to alter one thing or another, and often in order to “fix” one kind of depression or another, the Doctor needs to “try” different drugs to judge their efficacy with regard to a particular patient.

Unfortunately too, many patients feel that the changes do not occur quickly enough. Many seem to believe that three or four days of taking a specific drug should bring forth changes to their depression. Psychotropic drugs frequently take over a month to truly show reasonable effects, thus if you are prescribed something for your depression, please keep this in mind.
